Dave's Story

“What can you do?”
“I can weld. I can fix things. I can do whatever.”
“Can you start tomorrow?”

Dave walked into Pierce for an application and walked out with orders to show up at 7 A.M. sharp the following Monday. His first day wasn’t your average meet and greet, either. He was immediately learning the ropes from a team member who had been at Pierce for over 25 years. And by Day 2, he was building a body.

“I didn’t even know where the bathroom was yet.”

Thirty-nine years ago, Dave was responsible not only for building panels and bodies, but also lifting them – by hand – to assemble the vehicle. There were no fancy prints back then either. You had a notebook that you recorded every single detail in.

He’s done nearly everything there is to do at Pierce: welding, supervising, fabricating, chassis building, plant managing – you name it. So it’s no surprise he grew into the trainer he is today. If you need to learn how to build a fire truck, you learn from Dave. The guy who got to work on the first Pierce Arrow chassis. He remembers that day distinctly, as well as the way Doug Ogilvie turned to him to say, This is going to make us.

His momentous history, combined with the incredibly rewarding things he does today, is what gives him the perspective to say what he says. And the man does have a lot to say.

“We build the best. And it’s never been any different.”
