A Legacy of Service, A History of Success
Fire & Safety Services was founded by Walter Runyon in 1964 with a vision to support firefighters through equipment, education and reliability. In 1982, William Russell took ownership and expanded the dealership’s capabilities. His son, David Russell, became President in 2006, solidifying Fire & Safety Services as a second-generation, family-led business.
The dealership has grown from a four-person operation in a 1,100 square foot shop to nearly 75 employees today.
“We’re dedicated to doing our part to elevate the fire service, enhance community safety and serve as a true partner to every department we support.” - David Russell, Owner, Fire & Safety Services
Committed to Customer and Community Support
At Fire & Safety Services, giving back is part of who we are - not for recognition, but because it’s the right thing to do. We support the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation by helping offset event costs in New Jersey and have long contributed to the Burn Foundation, which serves families across Maryland, Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.
In the wake of natural disasters like Superstorm Sandy and Tropical Storm Irene, our team worked tirelessly to restore units to service while also helping departments hardest hit. It’s all part of our mission to stand by those who serve, both in moments of celebration and in times of greatest need.
“When the fire service thrives, we thrive. Our goal has always been to deliver apparatus and services that make a meaningful difference for our customers and their communities.” - David Russell, Owner, Fire & Safety Services
Testimonials
In 1972, the Elizabeth Fire Department purchased their first Pierce built apparatus, it was a 1972 Snorkel/Oshkosh/Pierce body articulating boom. Safe to say, this is where our Pierce story begins. Next, in approximately 1984, we owned a 1980 Mack/Pirsch rear-mount aerial that was involved in a rollover accident. As part of the accident repairs, the severely damaged cab was replaced with a Pierce-Arrow cab. In 1999, we took delivery of a Pierce 61’ Skyboom pumper, with a National Foam Servo-Command system. This unit is still in reserve status.
In 2011, we began work on a specialized HRET Foam Unit. In the years that would follow, our Department migrated towards standardizing our chassis-line that our pumpers, aerials, rescues, and specialty apparatus would be built on. The approach has mainstreamed routine maintenance, repairs, and has drastically reduced apparatus out-of-service time for basic repairs since items like door handles, window regulators, and other high-use components can be stocked and on-hand for same-day repairs.
As a participating vendor with Government Contract pricing, we work with our local New Jersey Dealer, Fire & Safety Services. Fire & Safety has been a partner between our department and Pierce Manufacturing for over 40 years through sales, parts, and service.
Although the number of years we have worked with Pierce Manufacturing only accounts for half of the company’s existence, our experiences have been positive and professional. From concept to frontline service, our Pierce apparatus provide the support and capabilities our personnel, and the citizens of our City, not only rely on, but deserve.
From the initial planning stages to the final delivery, the professionalism and expertise of the Fire & Safety Services team, particularly our sales representative John O’Keefe, were exemplary. Your understanding of our specific operational needs and your commitment to ensuring every detail was accounted for made the entire purchasing process seamless and reassuring.
The Enforcer pumpers are not only a significant asset to our fleet but also represent a major investment in the safety of our firefighters and the community we serve.
Thank you for your unwavering commitment to excellence and for being a trusted partner in our mission.
Sincerely,
Chief Jonathan Yahr
Lakewood Fire Department
Board of Fire Commissioners, Lakewood Fire District No. 1
Our journey with Pierce began in the mid-1990s, when we became one of the first departments in our area to invest in their apparatus. At the time, we were looking for more than just a fire truck — we were looking for a long-term solution we could trust to protect our community and our firefighters. Pierce delivered then, and they continue to deliver now.
Over the decades, we've seen firsthand the quality and innovation that go into every Pierce vehicle. These trucks are built with purpose — engineered to handle the demands of real-world emergency response, and designed with the firefighter in mind. The reliability, safety, and performance of our Pierce fleet have been instrumental in helping us respond effectively to the needs of our community.
But just as important as the trucks themselves has been the relationship we’ve built with Fire & Safety. From the very beginning, their team has gone above and beyond — not just selling us equipment, but standing beside us as true partners. They’ve been there through every spec meeting, delivery, maintenance need, and upgrade, with a level of responsiveness and expertise that’s hard to find. Their service has always been personal, professional, and centered around making sure our crews have what they need to operate safely and efficiently.
Together, Pierce and Fire & Safety have earned our trust over nearly three decades. That trust isn’t just based on the trucks we drive — it’s built on consistent support, shared values, and a mutual commitment to excellence in fire service. We’re proud of that history, and even prouder to continue the relationship moving forward.
