The Modesto Fire Department's mission is to serve, protect and partner with their community for a safer Modesto. They started out as a volunteer department served by judges, lawyers, mechanics, merchants and clergy men. From 1881 - 1901, Modesto was struck by numerous large fires burning down businesses and homes. In 1910, George Wallace was hired as the first paid Firefighter who continues to hold a legacy at the department today.
