APPLETON, Wis. (May 26, 2022) – Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) company, announced registration is now open for the tenth annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Co-sponsored by Pierce and the Green Bay Metro Fire Department this year’s climb will take place on Saturday, September 10, 2022. The event is open to everyone who wishes to honor and recognize the 343 firefighters lost on September 11, 2001. All funds raised will directly benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF). Participants can see additional details and pre-register at piercemfg.com/climb.

The 2021 climb marked the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania. Last year’s record attendance exceeded 2,800 members of the fire service, their families, friends, and community members who helped raise more than $180,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

“Now more than 20 years after 9/11, it remains a moment forever etched in our memories and our annual memorial stair climb is just a small way to honor the members of the fire service who were lost that day,” said Chief David W. Litton of the Green Bay Metro Fire Department. “We remain grateful to be able to help provide the opportunity for people to recognize those heroes and to raise money for the important services provided by the NFFF.”

On the steps of historic Lambeau Field, participants will have the opportunity to climb the equivalent of 110 stories – the height of the fallen World Trade Center towers. Each climber receives a badge with the name and photograph of one of the fallen firefighters to symbolically make the climb they were unable to finish on that fateful day. At the equivalent of the 78th floor of the towers, the highest floor firefighters reached on 9/11, each climber rings the fire bell in honor of the fallen firefighter on their badge. The stair climb is not a timed race and participants can climb to any desired level.

Event details include:

  • Event registration is $35 per climber through July 8, 2022, $40 per climber July 9 - August 26, 2022, and $45 per person through the day of the climb.
  • Pre-registrants will receive an event t-shirt if registered by August 5, and all climbers will receive an honor badge.
  • Climbers can pre-register and check in the evening before the climb from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. near Lot 5 at Lambeau Field.
  • An opening ceremony will take place at 9:00 a.m. featuring the Presentation of the Colors, National Anthem, and a prayer. Climbing safety guidelines and instructions will be announced prior to the bagpiper procession into the stadium.
  • Start times will be organized into 10-minute waves of 343 climbers and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Entertainment will be provided on the stage near the Kwik Trip Gate for event supporters and participants waiting to climb.
  • Pre-registration, event details, and FAQs are available on the Facebook event page or at piercemfg.com/climb.

Pierce and the Green Bay Metro Fire Department support the NFFF’s mission to develop and expand programs to honor and remember America’s fallen fire heroes and provide resources to assist their families in rebuilding their lives. Through the Fire Hero Family Network, support networks, conferences, workshops, and scholarships, the NFFF has led a nationwide effort to develop and expand programming for the entire fire service community.

“No day has greater significance to the modern fire service than 9/11 when 343 FDNY firefighters died in the line of duty,” said Jim Johnson, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Fire & Emergency. “In the immediate aftermath of the September 11th attacks, our nation demonstrated fortitude and perseverance. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is one way we can continue to support the fire service beyond the apparatus we build each day, and collectively promise to never forget.”
